Autograph letter signed ("U.S. Grant") as President, to Mr. Hoey, Washington, D.C., 5 February 1873. 2 pages, large 8vo, integral blank, on imprinted "Executive Mansion" stationery. GRANT CONSIDERS A VISIT TO THE RECONSTRUCTED SOUTH "In my last letter...I forgot to answer as to whether I still proposed to make the Southern tour; If there is not a March term of Congress I do propose making the trip spoken of when you were here. It is not probable that there will be a March term, though it is possible one may become necessary. I hope not. The only thing I have to add...is, whether it would be convenient to make arrangements for taking Mrs. Grant and the ladies of the Cabinet at the same time. I do not know that they will desire to go, or whether it will be desirable to take them under any circumstances, but I make the inquiry in advance before broaching the subject...." Although Grant later visited Europe, Egypt, Japan and the American West, the planned visit to the defeated South never was accomplished. A month after this letter, Grant was inaugurated for his second term.
