An oblong artist's sketchbook (5¼ x 7 1/8 in.) of heavy paper, some pages with tissue guards. Original binding of brown cloth, new leather spine, some minor spotting and soiling, but generally in very good condition. Blue morocco gilt slipcase. "256 BATTLES FOUGHT...AND LOST NONE": THE GRANT FAMILY AND PHIL SHERIDAN TOUR MEXICO Miss Courtney, a passenger on the steamship "City of Mexico," was a talented amateur artist, and passed her time on deck rendering a number of portraits and views of fellow passengers and scenery. Among her subjects were former President Grant--three years out of office--former First Lady Julia Dent Grant and son Frederick. On a rear flyleaf Miss Courtney has noted "256 Battles fought by Gen. Grant - and lost none. The above was told me by Col. Fred Grant and noted herein at the moment in his presence on board the steamer City of Mexico, March 24th 1880." Other subjects in Courtney's sketchbook include: an armed figure with rifle and sword, seated woman with book on lap, a bewhiskered gentleman labeled "Wilson," a sleeping girl, a standing figure in colorful theatrical costume, a nun in habit holding a book, a voluptuous woman in scanty dress, a man seated on deck smoking a cigar ("near New Orleans"), a woman with parasol, a man in deck chair reading newspaper, views of the cities of Puebla, Orizaba, palm trees, plus a fine full-page "Map of the Mexican railroad," showing the route from Vera Cruz to Guadalupe.
