GRANT ULYSSES S.]: (1822-1885) American President 1869-77 and Commanding General of the United States Army (1864-69) during the American Civil War. An original, vintage slim 8vo printed broadside issued by Robert Allen Jr. at the time of the death of Grant, bearing the printed heading The Hero at Rest and featuring his portrait above a six verse poem which commences 'The Soldier crossed the ocean foam-/He had lived on fields of war/ He had sought to live in a smiling home/ And in peaceful scenes afar' and concludes 'Lay him to rest, in his chosen land/ Where his loved ones near abide/ Where, may grateful hearts, and comrades hands/ Enshrine Columbia's Pride'. With the blindstamp of Robert Allen Jr., Notary Public in New Jersey, to the lower right border. A few dark stains, largely to the lower edge, only very slightly affecting a few words of text at the base. G £ 200-300
