Two volumes, 19th century half green pebbled leather, marbled boards. 18 1/2 x 11 3/4 inches (47.5 x 29 cm); half-titles, titles printed in red and black with engraved vignettes, [18], 242 pp.; [4], 247-324, 324a-324k, 362, 362a, 363, 363a, 364, 364a, 365, 365a, 366, 366a, 367, 367a, 368, 368a, 369-419, [1]; a large folding bird's-eye view of Venice (475x1075 mm) and a folding chart of the city (490 x 570 mm), both after Blaeu, and 115 double-page plates (all the plates on guards), after Vincenzo Coronelli and Luca Carlevarijs and others. Some wear to the bindings, the joints a bit rubbed, but a solid copy. A very wide-margined example indeed, the top edge only trimmed else preserving the original sheet deckles; slight toning and occasional spotting, very occasional faint damp-stains, almost entirely marginal. The two large folding plates and the titles bearthe ink stamp of a monastic library (Bibliotheca Abbatiae Vallis-Dei). There is a bookplate in each volume to the same effect, and the arms shown in these indicate that the abbey in question was that of Val-Dieu in Belgium. A magnificent work, among the finest books ever produced on Venice. The illustrations depict the monuments of the City, as well as daily life on the streets and canals, including popular and religious festivals, regattas, ceremonies, processions, and parades. The text is mostly taken from the work of Domenico Martinelli. (2 Vol)
