GRADUAL, in Latin, LARGE ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Spain, ?1554] c.730 x 520mm. 114 + ii leaves, including a lifted pastedown: 1-19 6 , 5 lines of music of square notation on a four-line stave of red and 5 lines of text written in dark brown ink in a gothic bookhand, rubrics and foliation in arabic numerals in red, TWO LARGE ILLUMINATED INITIALS with staves of gold, the infills and grounds with entwined tendrils and flowers of pink, red and green, accompanied by similar borders of curling foliage into two margins, large initials with divided staves of red and blue or red and black until f.36, then large initials either calligraphic brown, red or occasionally blue (repairs to 15 folios, small splits in margins, rodent damage upper and lower edges). Old wooden boards re-covered, original sewing (hinges split, spine defective). This is a Gradual for the Feasts from Ascension to the 20th Sunday after the Octave of Trinity, followed by the Feast for the Dedication of a Church and the Kyrie . It was made for a Dominican convent with royal patronage: on f.110v the scribe Fr. Bartholomeus Alema' records that he wrote the work on the orders of A.R.P.F. Michaelis Sorèll, prior of 'huius regalis conventus', below this is a date 1_54. A suggested 5 has been supplied to replace the erased second digit.
