GOULD, JOHN and NICHOLAS AYLWARD VIGORS. A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains. London: [published for the author], [1831-] 1832. Large folio, half pigskin gilt, worn, spine broken and almost entirely detached, plates 9 and 33 supplied from another slightly shorter and narrower copy, some foxing and dampstaining to text, light mostly marginal foxing to 10 plates, plate 27 browned, very small marginal dampstains to pl. 80, occasional light offsetting from the plates, vertical repair to text leaf of pl. 54 . FIRST EDITION, second issue with the backgrounds colored, 80 hand-colored lithographed plates by Elizabeth Gould after sketches by Gould, printed by C. Hullmandel. Nissen/ IVB 374; Anker 168; Fine Bird Books p. 77; Wood 364; Zimmer 251. Gould's first book, based on a collection of bird skins imported from the Indian hill regions, and "the most accurately illustrated work on foreign ornithology published up to that date" (Jackson, Bird Illustrators , p. 41).
