GOULD, Glenn (1932-1982). Autograph letter signed ('G--m.m.e') to an unidentified recipient, Berlin, 24 September 1958, four pages, 4to , torn rather roughly from a pad. GOULD THE ECCENTRIC: the pianist is on a European tour, '2 down and 68 to go', and reports on the 'fantabulous success' of his Berlin concerts, 'I absolutely swoon with this orchestra -- it really is my favourite -- and Karajan was wonderful', as well as on a 'jam session' with the conductor, during which 'he experimented with my chair and found it most intriguing', and on his manager, who 'precedes me into all new rooms and studios to make sure that the temperature is 22° C' (Gould's absolute minimum), ending with praise of the prose of George Santayana. Gould gave up performing in public in 1964. His notorious chair, with screws to adjust the height of each leg, permitted an unusually low position at the instrument. (2)
