Preliminary design for a poster for the second Bal Banal.
c. 1926. Colored pencil on paper. (185 x 240 mm). In Italian 17th-century parcel-gilt and black painted cassetta wooden frame. Provenance : bears the stamp of “Atelier M. Larionov” on the verso, affixed by Larionov’s second wife, Alexandra Tomilina. The second Bal Banal was planned to have taken place in 1926. A similar composition was used by Goncharova for Povolozky shop poster (sale Aguttes 19 Dec 2006, lot 155). The design of the two women wearing kokoshnik hats is typical of Goncharova's work in this mid-1920s period. We are grateful to Dr. Anthony Parton for his assistance in the cataloguing of this lot.
