GOETHE, Johann Wolfgang von. Iphigenie... Abdruck zur Feier des VII November MDCCCXXV . Weimar [i.e., Jena: J. G. Schreiber, 1825 (colophon)]. 4 o (198 x 162 mm). 72 leaves. Roman type. Half-title, title, verse prologue by Friedrich von Müller (1779-1849), Chancellor of Weimar, not included in all copies. (Light foxing, a few leaves darkened.) Contemporary blue boards (slightly rubbed); blue-green morocco two-part pull-off case. Provenance : PRESENTATION COPY, AUTOGRAPH PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION to Samuel Naylor, "in friendly memory of Weimar and of Goethe," dated 10 March 1831, on presentation slip pasted inside front cover ( Herren Samuel Naylor zu freundlichen Andenken an Weimar und Goethe 10 Marz 1831 ). This edition, printed on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Goethe's arrival in Weimar, was produced in a small number of copies hors commerce , probably intended for attendees of the festival and for presentation. The recipient of this copy, who had presumably attended the festivities, published a translation of the original Low German text of Reinke de vos , or Reynard the Fox (apparently the second translation of the original text, following that of D. W. Soltau in 1826), and produced a privately printed translation of excerpts from Goethe's Faust in 1839. von Müller's prologue is printed on a slightly different paper and has top edges gilt, although it does not appear to have been inserted at a later date. Hagen 180; Kippenberg I, 658 (a presentation copy from Chancellor von Müller).
