GOEDAERT, Joannes (1617-1668). Metamorphosis et historia naturalis inscectorum . Middelburg: Jacques Fierens, [1662-67-69].
GOEDAERT, Joannes (1617-1668). Metamorphosis et historia naturalis inscectorum . Middelburg: Jacques Fierens, [1662-67-69]. 3 volumes, 8 (152 x 95 mm). Engraved frontispiece in each volume, engraved portrait of the author in volume III, one heraldic vignette, and 126 engraved plates (2 folding), ALL COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND. (Some preliminary leaves misbound in vol. I, some occasional browning.) Contemporary vellum with double gilt fillets, gilt corner and central ornaments, smooth spine gilt, edges gilt and gauffered. Provenance : P. Lathbury (signature and purchase note on front flyleaf); acquired from Marlborough Rare Books, 1972. FIRST EDITION. Like many 'virtuosi' of the 17th century, Joannes Goedaert, who never attended university, began his investigations of the natural realm from the standpoint of an artist and craftsman. His sole work, Metamorphosis naturalis , was the earliest study of insect populations in the Netherlands. By capturing 'larvae' and raising them to maturity, and by calling on his existing expertise as a painter, Goedaert was able to observe and record the transformations of beetles, flies, wasps, butterflies and moths. A FINE SET, complete with the third volume, published posthumously. Nissen ZBI 1603. (3)
