GIOVIO, Benedetto (1471-1544). De Venetis Gallicum trophaeum . [Milan: G.da Ponte, ca.1510]. 4° (194 x 133mm). 6 leaves. Title within a woodcut border and with a small woodcut of the arms of France. (Closed tear in title-page and following leaf.) Red morocco gilt by Petit, arms of France on sides (a little rubbed). Provenance : Giuseppe Martini (bookplate). FIRST and only edition of Benedetto Giovio's rare encomium on Louis XII's part in the crushing victory that the League of Cambrai won over Venice at the Battle of Agnadello in 1508. The author, a capable historian and linguist (he learnt Greek from Demetrius Chalcondylas and also spoke Arabic) was Paolo Giovio's older brother and, on the death of their father, undertook Paolo's education, persuading him to forsake medicine and become a historian.
