Description: Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (Italian, 1609-1664) Two Etchings: Fête du Pan and The Philosopher Diogenes Searching for an Honest Man. Pan signed in the plate "G. Béned.to CAS." l.r., inscribed "Jo.Jac. Rossi form. Romae 1642 alla Pace" l.c., titled and inscribed ".../Benedetto Castiglione" in ink on the reverse, plate size 9 1/8 x 7 1/4 in., unmatted, unframed; Philosopher signed "C. Bened. Castglio.../in. P" l.l., with the publisher's inscription "...Gio Domenico Rossi alla Pace..." l.r., plate size 8 5/8 x 12 in., matted, unframed. Condition: Trimmed to edges of the plates, toning and minor foxing, Philosopher with creases, laid down on paper support. N.B. The prints are later impressions with the publisher's names of Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi and Giandomenico de Rossi, Italian engravers and printers active in Rome in the mid to late 17th century. Provenance: The collection of Professor and Mrs. Jonathan Brown Princeton.
