By descent in the family to her granddaughter, Sara Fendall Harrison, Leesburg, Virginia, 1922. Norton & Company, Inc., 1964, p. 470, no. 482. note: Anne (Nancy) Lee (1770-1804) was the daughter of Richard Henry Lee and his wife, Mrs. Anne (Gaskins) Pinkard, of Westmoreland County, Virginia. Richard Henry Lee was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, the First Continental Congress, and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. His daughter, Anne (Nancy) Lee married Judge Charles Lee who was Attorney General under Presidents Washington and Adams. According to Merrill Mount, "Mrs. Charles Lee was a favorite in Philadelphia society." The Lee family was and remains an important American family, with its members serving various governmental and military roles throughout the country's history. The sitter in the present portrait is related to possibly the most famous of the Lee's, Civil War Confederate General Robert E. Lee, as his aunt through marriage.
