Giacomo Guardi
Italian 1764-1835-
A pair of Venetian views, depicting the Arsenal and the Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo;
each watercolour and bodycolour on paper, each signed 'Giacomo de Guardi' verso, the first inscribed 'Veduta dell'esterno dell'Arsenal Veneto / all 'Ospedalletto in SS. Gion e Paolo No.5245 dimandar' verso, the second inscribed 'Veduta di SS. Gio e Paolo / all'Ospedalletto in calle del Peruchier al No 5245 dimandar' verso, each 13.1 x 22.8 cm., a pair (2).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present Venetian scenes are characteristic works by Giacomo Guardi executed in a distinctive style which was nevertheless heavily informed by the work of the artist's father, Francesco Guardi (1712-1793). Like his father, Giacomo Guardi specialised in Venetian vedute of which the present paintings are typical examples, depicting views which the artist treated on multiple occasions. Indeed, an almost identical view of the Arsenal is held in the collection of the Morgan Library & Museum, New York [1996.24], and another of the Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Looking Toward the Scuola di San Marco, can be found in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York [1975.1.348].
