An early edition of Gesner's 'most popular work' (Wellisch), containing the posthumous first edition of the second part, edited by Gesner's student Caspar Wolf It is a work of medical alchemy based on Paracelsus, collecting recipes for distillation, wine-making, and medicines. Most of the woodcuts reproduce various stills. It was first published in 1552 under the pseudonym Euonymus Philiatrus ('A well-known friend of the art of medicine'). Adams G-530; NLM 2087; Wellisch A 32.8 and B 2.1;Waller 3520. Octavo (158 x 98mm). Woodcut device of Christopher Froschouer II on title, numerous woodcut illustrations (wormtracks in lower margin just touching a letter on a few leaves, occasional staining). Early green-stained vellum over thin boards, all edges red (spine a little rubbed). Provenance: 'Marlini Slovak Med. Doctoris’ (early inscription on title).
