Textholzschnitten. Mod. Ldr. über Holzdeckeln im Stil d. Zt. mit Rsch. u. 2 Schließen, unter Verwendung der reich blindgeprägten Deckelbezüge der Zeit mit Wappensupralibros; vorderer Deckelbezug mit Wurmspuren.
4 works in 1 volume, complete with quadruped-, fish-, bird- and snake-book of Gesner's "most autoritative zoological book" (PMM 77). "Schlangenbuch" in first German edition. Illustrated with more than 1000 woodcuts (many full-page). - Carefully cleaned and restored. Lower inner corner waterstained throughout and somewhat mildew-stained, heavier at the beginning and at the end, partially reinforced with China paper, occasionally with restored defects. Some mildew-spotting to gutter in places and partially backed with China. Otherwise hardly stained. Some decreasing worming (from p. 50 only 3-4 wormholes) to first part, second part up to p. 68, and third from p. 154 onwards with 1-2 wormholes, increasing worming of last part towards the end. Very few, mostly restored marginal tears. Title of part 1 completely mounted, somewhat browned at outer margins, partially remargined at gutter and with tipped-in engr. portrait of Gesner from J. Sambucus, Icones, 1574 verso. Fol. a2-a4 partly remargined at gutter. Part 2, fol. 161 with supplemented lower corner with small part of text and woodcut carefully redrawn in ink. Part 3, fol. 129 with larger restored tear, fol. 190 with small tear due to paper flaw. Bound in modern full-calf over wooden boards with the use of the contemp. richly blind-tooled covers with coat-of-arms and modern gilt label to spine; remnants of worming to front cover.
