GERONIMO (Indian name: Goyathlay), (1829-1909), Chief of the Chiricahua Apache . Large photograph signed ("GERONIMO"), also signed by the Chiricahua chief CHRISTIAN NAICHE (1856-1921), ("Christian Naiche"), who is also depicted in the photograph, by an unidentified photographer, n.d. [ca.1900-1909?].
11½ x 9¼ in., including black card mount. Signed in dark ink by both subjects in the lower portion of the image. With authentication of James Lowe Autographs Inc. AN UNUSUALLY LARGE-FORMAT PHOTOGRAPH OF GERONIMO, WITH A FINE INK SIGNATURE. The arresting image, showing the elderly Apache leader standing on the prairie, a broad-brimmed hat shading his face, one gloved hand holding a rawhide-wrapped tool of some sort, his saddled horse partly visible behind him. To his left stands Christian Naiche, one hand holding the reins of another horse standing to the rear. This image, rarely encountered, constitutes THE LARGEST-FORMAT SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH OF GERONIMO THAT WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED. It is signed in Geronimo's curious and very characteristic block style, which seldom varied. The legendary Apache chief signed a number of photographs in his later years, some from his appearance in the Pawnee Bill Wild West Shows, others from his brief appearance at the St. Louis Exposition in September 1904. This image does not appear to date from either of those occasions, and we have not been able to trace another example of the image. Naiche, who accompanies Geronimo, was the second son of Cochise and the last war chief of the Chriricahuas. In 1881 he led his tribe away from the San Carlos Reservation and allied himself with Geronimo and his band.
