GERARD, JOHN. The Herball or Generall Historie of Plantes. London: John Norton 1597. Folio, 320 x 215mm. (12 5/8 x 8 1/2in.), nineteenth-century calf, covers detached, backstrip defective, title-page soiled and with single vertical crease, tiny hole in P7 catching five letters, another in Ccccc2 catching two letters, T3 with small patch affecting two words; Ss7, Vv6 and Qqqq8 torn, the second of these crudely repaired with scotch tape, slight worming at foot of leaves Vv2 through Xx2, very occasional staining, final leaves a little browned, gutter of final leaf strengthened. FIRST EDITION, engraved title by William Rogers engraved portrait of Gerard, also by Rogers, approximately 1800 woodcuts of plants in text. Complete copies of the first edition have become scarce in recent years.
