Beschreibung:

Artist: Gerard Dillon RHA RUA (1916-1971) Title: Two Sides Signature: signed lower right, signed & titled verso Medium: oil on panel Size: 34½ x 44½cm (13.75 x 17.5in) Provenance: Whytes, Dublin 28th April 2008, Lot 54 Private Collection Exhibited: High Lanes Municipal Art Gallery: A Retrospective of Gerard Dillon and Nano Reid 6th November 2009 - 10th January 2010: Catalogue Page 28. More info: Click to read more about this lot The exhibition listed above dealt with paintings by both artists created during the periods that they spent together in Drogheda and Connemara. Two Sides depicts an abstract aerial view of what appears to be Roundstone in Connemara. Painted in the 1960's Dillon at this stage had embraced abstraction but had always been keenly interested in architecture and the landscape and topography of his beloved Connemara as evidenced by his famous depiction of Inishlacken. Dillon had also started to focus on compartmentalising within his paintings. In Two Sides Dillon encases a two dimensional topographical view of the village and harbour as the centre point of the composition yet permits the borders to hint at a more three dimensional seascape and shoreline. Dillon's use of various moody shades of blue, purple, greenish yellow and white contrast starkly with the black outline. Two Sides is one of Dillon's most atmospheric and important abstract paintings.
