Born in Virginia ca. 1749, George Walton was orphaned as an infant, and adopted by an uncle with whom he apprenticed as a carpenter. He signed the Declaration of Independence and was committed to the patriot cause. He served in the Revolutionary War, but was injured and captured in the Battle of Savannah. He was exchanged in 1779. In October, he was elected Governor of Georgia, but only served 2 months. He held many other positions - Chief Justice of Georgia (1783-1789), Governor (1789), U.S. Senator (1795), Indian commissioner (1783), and more. Condition: Light overall toning.
