George VI, King of the United Kingdom; and Queen Elizabeth, queen consort
Signed photographs of each, presented to Clement Attlee:
i) King George VI, photographic portrait by Hugh Cecil depicting the king quarter-length in naval uniform, image taken in May 1940, signed by the photographer, 148 X 191mm., mounted, signed on the mount ("George R.I. 1945"), in a frame with royal monogram (224 x 318mm.)
ii) Queen Elizabeth, consort of George VI, photographic portrait by Cecil Beaton, depicting the queen three-quarter length, crowned and in formal dress with a depiction of Windsor Castle in the background, image taken in 1953, photographer's stamp on the reverse, 148 x 200mm., mounted, signed on the mount ("Elizabeth R 1955"), in a frame with royal monogram (224 x 317mm.)

iii) Later photographic portrait of Clement Attlee in retirement, at home, in front of a dresser with various photographs including (i) and (ii), 203 x 257mm.
ROYAL GIFTS TO A LOYAL AND TRUSTED PRIME MINISTER. The photograph of George VI is dated 1945, the year that Attlee assumed the premiership. It may well have been a gift to mark Attlee's new role as head of government. The photograph of the King's consort, Queen Elizabeth, is dated 1955, by which time she was Queen Mother. Attlee finally retired from the Commons and the Labour leadership in 1955 and this may have been a personal gift on his retirement. A third photograph, included with this lot, shows both photographs on prominent view in Attlee's home during his retirement.
