George Marsh Hollow Column Clock, Connecticut, c. 1832, mahogany veneered case with carved eagle splat, round hollow Doric columns flanking the round, painted wood, Arabic numeral dial, reverse-painted lower door glass, label inside marked in part: Patent Brass Eight-Day Clocks Manufactured for George Marsh & Co., all on carved paw feet, eight-day Ives strap brass movement powered by two lead weights which descend through the columns and regulated by a pendulum, ht. 38 in. Provenance: Peter Mitchell Mitchell Inn, Middletown, New York. Note: The present clock is illustrated in Early American Clocks, Vol. III, by Dan Maust, 1975, p. 72; American Clocks and Clock Makers, by Carl Drepperd, p. 101 (illus.); NAWCC Bulletin, February 1949, whole number 27, p. 564; and American Antiques Journal, April 1949, p. 19. The lot is accompanied by a copy of Antiques Journal, Drepperd, and the NAWCC bulletin.
