Deutsch-amerikanischer Maler, Grafiker und Karikaturist des 20. Jahrhunderts. Hauptvertreter des Verismus und der Neuen Sachlichkeit. Zählt zur sog. Exilkunst. Studierte 1909 bis 1911 an der Kunstakademie in Dresden, 1912 bis 1916 an der Kunstgewerbeschule bei Emil Orlik in Berlin. Arbeitete ab 1913 im Atelier von Colarossi in Paris. 1914 als Freiwilliger in den Ersten Weltkrieg, nach einer Erkrankung kriegsunfähig. Wurde zum Kriegsgegner, wie sein Freund John Heartfield 1916 Gründung der ersten Dada-Zeitschrift Neue Jugend mit Franz Jung und Wieland Herzfelde. 1918 erster dadaistischer Vortragsabend in der Berliner Secession gemeinsam mit Raoul Hausmann und Richard Huelsenbeck 1919 und 1920 Gründung mehrerer Kunstzeitschriften u.a. die Pleite, der blutige Ernst. Satirische Karikaturen von Grosz führen zu Protesten und Verurteilungen wegen Pornografie und Gotteslästerung. 1933 Emigration in die USA, Lehrtätigkeit an der Art Students League of New York. 1937 wurden seine Werke von den Nazis als entartete Kunst eingestuft. Seine Schüler in der USA waren u.s. Jackson Pollock und James Rosenquist Schuf sozial- und gesellschaftskritische Arbeiten, Szenen aus der Unterwelt und dem Rotlichtmilieu, Aktdarstellungen, Karikaturen und Illustrationen. Stilistsiche dem Verismus und der Neuen Sachlichkeit zuzuordnen, vergleichbar mit Otto Dix Christian Schad Rudolf Schlichter Karl Hubbuch Georg Scholz und Jeanne Mammen
