A Critico-Bibliographical Essay Author: Bates, William Place: Birmingham Publisher: Houghton and Hammond Date: 1878 Description: 77 pp. With black and white full page and text illustrations by Cruikshank, as well as numerous additional examples of the artist's work, most tipped in on India paper. (4to) 27.5x21 cm (11x8"), three quarter calf and brown cloth, raised spine bands with gilt decorated compartments, red morocco spine label lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers. One of "a very limited number" of the Large Paper, extra-illustrated edition. George Cruikshank was a British caricaturist and book illustrator, praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens and many other authors, reached an international audience. Scarce and nicely bound copy of the Large Paper edition featuring numerous examples of his work. Lot Amendments Condition: Light wear to calf with rubbing to joints and extremities; very good.
