For the First Series 'It was decided [by a Special General Committee of the Geological Society] first that there should be printed 750 copies of each volume of the journal, and second "That the ink employed shall be of the best quality". The Society was determined to produce a journal capable of standing comparison with any other of the world's leading periodicals' (Herries Davies, Whatever is under the Earth; the Geological Society of London 1807 to 2007, page 37). Important contributors to the first series include such names as Leonard Horner, Thomas Webster James Parkinson, William Buckland Richard Hennah, John Macculloch and J.S. Henslow. The Second Series contains articles by Charles Darwin, Charles Lyell, Buckland, Murchison, Richard Owen, Gideon Mantell, William John Broderip and W.D. Conybeare.
