GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF LONDON Transactions of the Geological Society . London: William Phillips for the Geological Society, 1811- 1821. First series, comprising vols I-V, 4° (276 x 215mm), numerous engraved plates and maps, many folding and hand-coloured. (Occasional light browning and spotting.) The first vol. in contemporary binder's cloth, leather spine label (extremities rubbed), the others uniform in modern half morocco with red leather spine labels. Provenance : John C. Thackray. IMPORTANT EARLY RUN OF THE PREMIER PERIODICAL DEDICATED TO GEOLOGY . 'It was decided [by a Special General Committee of the Geological Society] first that there should be printed 750 copies of each volume of the journal, and second "That the ink employed shall be of the best quality". There was to be no skimping. The Society was determined to produce a journal capable of standing comparison with any other of the world's leading periodicals' (Herries Davies, Whatever is under the Earth; the Geological Society of London 1807 to 2007 , p.37). Challinor identifies some 17 important papers within these volumes, by such names as Leonard Horner, Thomas Webster James Parkinson, William Buckland Richard Hennah, John Macculloch and J.S. Henslow: 64, 66-68, 74, 75, 77, 81-85, 88, 94, 98-100. Sold as a periodical, not subject to return.
