Title: Geographical Memoir Upon Upper California, in Illustration of his Map of Oregon and California by John Charles Frémont Addressed to the Senate of the United States Author: Frémont, John Charles Place: Washington Publisher: Tippin & Streeper Date: 1849 Description: 40 pp. With large folding lithographed map. (8vo) 22x14.5 cm (8¾x5½"), removed from larger volume with remains of stitching on spine, original wrappers not present. Second (i.e. House) issue. The short report was written primarily to explain the important map, drawn by Charles Preuss, which covers the entire West from the Rockies to the Pacific, measuring 83x66 cm., with a little hand coloring in outline. Wheat calls the map "the one great general map of 1848." He also comments that it is probably the first map, with a wide circulation, to locate the gold regions in California. The report of this third expedition of Fremont is uncharacteristically short, due to Fremont's court martial and resignation from military service. Nevertheless, it enjoyed great popularity since the discovery of gold was announced almost simultaneously with its publication. Warren Heckrotte comments that "the house issue omits the Appendix which appeared in the Senate issue. The text is reset with smaller type so that the text occupies fewer pages than Senate issue. Howes states that the House issue has a different map (presumably the smaller version of the Fremont/Preuss map showing just Calif and what is now Nevada) but that is clearly not the case here. Pages 3-6 comment on the construction of the map." Cowan p.233; Graff 1429; Sabin 25837; Howes F366; Kurutz 256b; Wagner-Camp 150:2; Wheat Gold Region 58; Wheat Transmississippi 559. Added to the lot are two copies of the longer Senate version of the report, 1848, but neither has the map, and one is missing the rear wrapper, the other wrappers are present. Lot Amendments Condition: Map torn out of text with a panel remaining attached to the volume, map darkened a bit and brittle, a number of tears and splits but with minimal loss, quite repairable; good, sold as is. Item number: 273383
