GEOFFROY Saint Hilaire, Étienne (1772-1844) and Georges L.C.F.D., Baron de (1769-1832). Histoire Naturelle des Mammifères, avec des figures... dessinées d'après des animaux vivans. Paris: Firmin Didot and Rignoux for C. de Lasteyrie, 1819-1822. Parts 1-36 only (of 72) in 3 volumes, 2° (530 x 345mm). 8pp. Table Methodique and 6pp. Table du contenu at end of vol.II. 239 hand-coloured lithograph plates by J.C. Werner and others, printed by de Lasteyrie. (Some spotting and occasional offsetting, affecting about 33 plates.) Contemporary french red half morocco gilt, edges uncut (slightly scuffed). Provenance : Marquis of Lansdowne (circular white-leather armorial book-label). A fine part set. The work was completed in 1842 with the publication of the 72nd Livraison , giving a required plate total of either 430 or 432. According to the titles only 216 plates are required (72 in each volume) but the binder seems to have bound like with like and consequently vol.I contains 76 plates; vol.II 106 and vol.III 57. Nissen ZBI . This lot is sold as a collection of plates, not subject to return. (3)
