2pp., 5 x 8", on "Headquarters Army of the United States letterhead, Washington, D.C., 20 May 1878. Addressed to John L. Stevenson(?), Commanding A. & H. A. Co., with transmittal envelope with "Headquarters..." and "Official Business" preprinted. PLUS Civil War era cdv of Sherman, Anthony, New York backmark. In this letter, Sherman is expressing his regrets that he will not be available for a speaking engagement on the 3rd of June in Boston. He notes that, although he will be in New York on the 30th of May, he must return to Washington immediately because: "The whole army looks to me to represent their interests here, when our unfriendly Congress is threatening our very existence as a (unreadable) part of the Executive of the Nation," (and Sherman has written "Confidential" in the margin next to the above statement). Condition:Letter has usual folds, only light soil on outer folds, minor separation of central fold. Corner tabs added to blank third page to hold cdv. Minor toning on right edge of cvd, else both very good or better.
