Fables ... with a life of the author and embellished with seventy plates , London: for John Stockdale, 1793. 2 volumes, royal 8°, engraved title to each volume and 68 plates (lacking the list of subscribers and all after p. 176 in vol. II, both titles shaved at upper margin, that to vol. I also shaved at lower margin, some light browning), recent brown straight-grained morocco by Bickers & Son backed in calf, triple gilt fillets, spine panels with gilt ornament and contrasting morocco labels (extremities lightly rubbed), marbled endpapers, t.e.g. FIRST STOCKDALE EDITION. A second edition in smaller format appeared in 1811. 12 of the plates are signed by William Blake Bentley 460. BEWICK, Thomas. The Fables of Aesop and others, with designs on wood by Thomas Bewick , Newcastle: by E. Walker for T. Bewick and Son, 1818. 8°, wood-engraved head- and tail-pieces by Bewick (title spotted and browned at margins), later polished calf with double line rule and gilt-panelled spine, g.e. FIRST EDITION. Roscoe 45. READE, Charles. Peg Woffington , New York: for the Grolier Club, 1887. 2 volumes, 8°, vignettes by C. M. Jenckes, contemporary black morocco gilt by R. D. Joly, gilt inner dentelles, t.e.g. Provenance : Robert Hoe, morocco ownership label. One of 250 copies on Holland paper. With the 1802 edition of William Somerville's The Chase illustrated by Thomas Bewick 4 works illustrated by Hugh Thomson and 2 others by John Leech all bound in leather. (12)
