lot includes a gavel with plum wood head and walnut handle in fitted wood box, lined with green felt with manuscript label on interior of lid reading "Greetings"/This gavel is made from a part of a/plum tree planted by "Gen. U.S. Grant" in/the yard at his home in Galena Ill in 1857./Made and presented to the "Eastern Star"/Lodge at Apple River Ill./By/Phil Fetz/December 7, 1920 Galena Ill. Gavel is 11.5" long in original old varnish finish; box has key lock with key, white glazed clay marbles on inside and black ebony cubes (apparently in use as Lodge black-ball box) with cast brass figure of a knight on lid, and covered in original varnished canvas, 4" x 12" x 3.25" high. Condition: All EXC.
