With the half-title. 78 plates of which 5 are hand-coloured, and 13 vignettes of which 2 are hand-coloured. (Some mostly marginal spotting.) Contemporary half russia (extremities lightly rubbed, small loss of paper on front board). 'THE STANDARD WORK ON THE ANCIENT ART, CULTURE AND ARCHITECTURE OF THE NILE VALLEY, and the most complete pictorial record of Nubian antiquities of its day'; 'most of the engravers whose work is seen here also worked on Déscription de l'Egypte , to which the present work was intended to be an informal adjunct' (RIBA). RIBA 1180; Blackmer 656 (with only 4 plates coloured); Brunet II, 1504 ('bel ouvrage'); Vinet 1754bis (recording a near simultaneous German-language version).
