Paris, Salon des Artistes français, 1886, n° 468 ;Montauban, Exposition rétrospective et des beaux-arts de Montauban, 1891, n° 89.Catalogue noteA French painter born in Los Angeles, Gaston Célarié painted this touching portrait in 1883, one year after becoming a member of the Société des Artistes Français and two years before presenting it at the society’s Salon. He painted this portrait of his grandmother at Montauban, where he had lived and taught. The full-length image of the elderly woman with her loving, tender gaze, shown sitting in her home, represented an opportunity for the thirty-year-old artist to display the skills and expertise he had acquired a few years earlier in the studios of Jean-Léon Gérôme Fernand Cormon and Jean-Paul Laurens ____________________________________________
