Woodcut masthead vignettes, text printed in 5 columns, numerous woodcut illustrations, with "Extra" edition of January 1836; lacking Vol. II, No. 1, Vol. III, No. 48, and Vol. V, No. 1, about one-third of Vol. I., No. 1, pp. 1-2 torn away, lower corner of Vol. V, No. 7, pp. 1-2 torn away, lower half of Vol. V, No. 33, pp. 1-2 torn away, light browning, scattered spotting, dampstaining, primarily marginal closed tears some of which repaired, a few longer closed tears, marginal chips and tears sometimes costing a few letters or words, a few pencil annotations. Half calf and marbled paper-covered boards, spines with gilt-lettered black morocco labels. An early and extensive run of Garrison's anti-slavery newspaper. "Published by William Lloyd Garrison and Isaac Knapp, and edited by Garrison, The Liberator stands alone as the dominant printed source for those who sought the abolition of slavery in America. ... Articles include rants on the historical woes of slavery, the evils of African colonization, letters and reports about the hardships and brutalities of slave life, letters to the editor in support of abolition, publication notices for books related to slavery, and much, much more. ... Runs of The Liberator are exceedingly rare, due in large part to the fact that its original circulation only included around 3,000 subscribers, three-quarters of whom were freed slaves" (Celebration).
