Title: Garden Party - oil painting on board Author: Meltzoff, Stanley Place: No place Publisher: Date: No date Description: 32x48 cm. (12½x18¾"), framed. Original oil painting on board illustrating a scene from Shakespeare by noted illustrator and artist Stanley Meltzoff (1917-2006). Born in Brooklyn, the artist went from illustrating the covers of major national magazines and pulp paperbacks in the 1950s to become one of the world's foremost sporting artists. Meltzoff graduated Phi Beta Kappa from CCNY, becoming an instructor at the famed Pratt Institute of Art before WWII. During the war, he was an artist/correspondent for The Stars and Stripes, serving for four years in Italy. Shortly thereafter he became a full-time commercial artist and illustrator, producing covers for the Saturday Evening Post, Life, National Geographic, The Atlantic, and many others, including some 65 covers for Scientific American. In the 1960's as magazines turned to photographs for their covers, Meltzoff began painting saltwater game fish in their undersea environments. He was the first to do so, gaining premium commissions from Sports Illustrated and later in virtually all the major outdoor media. Stanley Meltzoff is considered not only the father of the genre but still its unchallenged master. The present painting is a scene from William Shakespeare's, Henry IV, Part 1, act III, scene 2, part of a series he did of Richard II and Henry IV for an illustrated anthology that was never published. The period scene is not only charming but reflects the artist's classical training and technical mastery. The painting is accompanied by a copy of the hardcover monograph "Stanley Meltzoff, Picture Painter" by Meltzoff and Mike Rivkin (2010, Silverfish Press); also, an issue of "Illustration" magazine from 2002 with an article by Meltzoff describing his career as an artist. In addition, there are two large prints of his "trade card," describing his range of work and illustrating much of it. Over the past decade, Meltzoff paintings of any stripe have rarely come up for auction, so this is especially significant. From an anonymous seller. Lot Amendments Condition: Fine condition. Item number: 214708
