Beschreibung:

Garbett (Samuel).- Manufactures Improper Subjects of Taxation. Addressed to the merchants and manufacturers of Great-Britain; being an attempt to prove that the riches and power of the nation depend in a great degree upon manufactures being free of all taxation, half-title, Samuel Garbett's copy with his ownership inscription to title and notes to margins, ink note in his hand to head of B1 "N.B. The manuscript notes were wrote in the margin with a pencil by a person to whom the book was lent and S.G. copyed them as a curiosity", bookplate of John Garbett to pastedown, contemporary calf-backed boards, rubbed, [Goldsmiths' 13048], 8vo, Printed and sold by James Phillips 1785. ⁂ A scarce work with an interesting association. Samuel Garbett (1717-1803), industrialist, was a friend of Boulton and chaired the Birmingham committee against the slave trade. In addition to the annotations mentioned are a few pencil notes including an attribution of the author as William Sandeman (1722-90) a Perthshire linen and cotton manufacturer, we can find no other source attributing him as the author.
