GANDHARAN SCHIST FIGURAL COLUMN SECTION 1st-3rd century AD A carved section of a figural column, square in plan, with high-relief carving to each face comprising: a horseman with a kneeling and a standing figure; a dancer with two attendants; a group of three figures with a T-shaped column between; two standing figures with a statue of the seated Buddha between; to each corner a column and plinth with scrolled vegetation detail above; the centre hollow. 21 kg, 29.5 cm (11 1/2"). Fine condition, chipped to lower edge. Provenance Private collection, London, UK; acquired late 1980s-early 1990s. Footnotes Schist is a medium-grade metamorphic rock with medium to large grains of mica flakes in a preferred orientation (nearby mica flakes are roughly parallel).
