GALEN. Hieremiae Thriveri Brachelii...commentarii in omnes Galeni libros de Temperamentis . Lyon: Guillaume Rouillé, 1547. [ Bound with: ] [H.T.] Galeni de Temperamentis...Epitome. Lyon: Godefroy & Marcellin Beringen, 1547. [ Bound with: ] [H.T.]... In TEXNHN Galeni...Commentarii. Lyon: Godefroy & Marcellin Beringen, 1547 (colophon dated 1548). 3 works in 1 volume, 16° (123 x 79mm). Printed in roman and italic (the Epitome in italic alone), the first work with Rouillé device on title, the others with Beringen devices on titles and final leaves. (Occasional light spotting, some damp-staining at end of last work, small marginal tear to final leaf.) CONTEMPORARY MOROCCO TOOLED IN BLIND AND GILT IN THE ATELIER OF MARCANTONIO GUILLERY, with titles gilt in cover panels (minor discreet repairs), modern black goatskin-backed plush-lined box by James Brockman. Provenance : (near-)contemporary ownership inscription tooled in gilt at head of front cover: IO.ALBERTO.PHISI.; 17th-century ownership inscription on title of the 'frères prêcheurs de Rennes'; 'p. God. Loyer 1707' (inscription on title). A RARE COLLECTION OF GALEN WORKS BOUND FOR A CONTEMPORARY MEDICAL DOCTOR. The handsome Roman binding is from the atelier of Marcantonio Guillery: the gilt trefoil tool used in the corners of the panels, the addorsed drawer-handle tool and the little three-legged tool used with the lettering appear on other Guillery bindings illustrated in Hobson, Apollo and Pegasus . Medical texts in contemporary bindings with early doctors' names on the cover are very rare; in this case the original owner's name has been erased or altered from the inscription and the name Alberto substituted at a very early date. The translations of Galen are by Thomas Linacre, founder of the College of Physicians in London. Durling 1226, 1228 and 1229; Wellcome 6290 and 6291.
