Bentley’s new ‘R’ Type was launched at the 1952 Earls Court Motor Show, powered by the 4,566cc version of the F-head six-cylinder engine, first seen in the Mark VI of 1946, albeit then in 4,250cc form. The new engine developed an estimated 150bhp and the ‘R’ Type was offered with either manual or automatic transmission. Compared to its Mark VI predecessor, the ‘R’ Type had an extended chassis, enabling a more commodious boot to be accommodated and at the same time giving the new car a more elegant profile. The customer list for the new model read like a ‘Who’s Who’ of industry, show business and nobility. This car, with automatic transmission, had just two owners before acquisition by the late Jack Howes in 1972. The indicated mileage of 77,264 miles at the time of cataloguing is believed genuine and supported by a series of MoT certificates showing mileage in 1972 of just 47,700 miles. Jack Howes was a well-known member of the R-R.E.C., maintaining his motor car stable fastidiously, entrusting its care only to the finest specialists. The car was reupholstered in beige hide in 1976 and power steering was fitted by Hofmanns in the 1990’s. The engine has been converted to run on modern fuels. Offered with the car are its original handbook, tray of small tools, large tools in the boot and two brown leather matched suitcases in a fitted carrying tray, together with a radiator town cap. A period radio is fitted, probably the original, as the car throughout is to original specification in all major respects. Front seat belts are fitted and the car carries R.A.C. and A.A. badges. This exceptionally well presented Bentley is currently licenced to November and MoT tested to October and comes with a Swansea V5 registration document (the Howe family’s cherished registration number has been retained) and its original buff log book, together with copies of the factory specification and build sheets.
