from Romanesque manuscripts, in Latin on parchment [eleventh and twelfth century] 7 pieces (one a large bifolium): (a) large fragment of a leaf from an early liturgical musical codex, 13 lines of small and precise Romanesque script with square neumes, small letters ‘c’ and ‘f’ in margin marking clef lines, capitals touched in red, rubrics in red, initials in same touched in yellow in Carolingian fashion, small amount of paper adhered to corners of reverse and scuffs at head, probably Germany, eleventh century, 190 by 145mm.; (b) large fragment from a leaf from a Glossed Bible (Deutronomy 24) with losses at one side and top, the remains of 25 lines of main text in a square Germanic hand with sharp bowed horizontal strokes and high compartments of the letter ‘e’, chapter numbers in terracotta red, margins filled with commentary in smaller rounder script with few biting curves and a ct-ligature, which in part corresponds to the commentary printed in Steinmeyer and Sievers, Die Althochdeutschen Glossen V, 1922, p.251, Germany, mid-twelfth century, 280 by 180mm.; (c) 2 leaves from a Bible (Numbers 14, 15 and 16), double column, 36 lines in a fine rounded bookhand without biting curves, capitals touched in yellow, simple red initials and rubrics, loss of a few lines at base and a few characters from outer edge, probably France, first half of twelfth century, 270 by 220mm., (d) monumental bifolium from a noted Missal, with double column, 29 lines in a large and refined bookhand, capitals touched in red, rubrics in red, initials in a variety of types (touched in red, red with wavy line of blank parchment left within the body, red with baubles mounted in bodies, black and half painted in red with one ‘A’ in gentle bowed arches, and a single red initial in early white vine style ending in a knot of acanthus shoots), music in tiny neumes arranged around a red Clef-line, France (perhaps central or southern), second half of twelfth century, each leaf 365 by 255mm.; (e) large cutting from a Psalter, with remains of double column, 23 lines in a fine late Romanesque bookhand, rubrics in capitals giving Psalm number and “CAN’ GRAD’” (for “canticum graduum”), 2 simple red initials and 2 others with delicate bands left within their bodies in blank parchment, probably France, late twelfth century, 215 by 290mm.; recovered from bindings and with concomitant damage, the outerside of the bifolium in (d) scuffed and rubbed, but legible, others trimmed at edges, else in good and presentable condition
