Titles with woodcut initials, woodcut printers’ devices, numerous woodcut initials throughout, two with contemporary hand-colouring in volume 3. (Lacking final blanks in volumes I and IV as called for in Fairfax Murray, volume II lacking final leaf with printer’s device, volume 3 lacking ccc2/7, yyy1, rrr gathering with a few leaves remargined with loss of text, volumes I and II with mostly marginal dampstaining, a few mostly marginal worm holes.) 19th-century half calf, marbled boards, edges gilt and gauffered volume II, all other edges gilt. Provenance : various French inscriptions-- ink marginalia in an early hand throughout. Presumed third edition of Froissart’s Chronicles , which provide a contemporary account of the first half of the Hundred Years’ War, as well as the life and customs of the nobility in 14th-century Western Europe. Several Parisian editions were issued between 1498 and 1518, including one by Antoine Verard, who published the first edition of c. 1498. 'On account of the scarcity of this edition one cannot say how frequent is the occurrence of the two names [i.e. Noir and Regnault] together, but in the later editions, especially in that of 1518, copies are invariably found "mixed," some with two, some with three different [printers’] names' (Fairfax Murray).
