Fritz Thaulow Norwegian, 1847-1906 River Arques, Dieppe, 1898 Norwegian, 1847-1906 River Arques, Dieppe, 1898 Signed Fritz Thaulow and dated Dieppe 98 (lr) Oil on canvas 21 5/8 x 25 13/16 inches (55 x 65.5 cm) Provenance: M. Knoedler & Co., New York Charles S. Phillips, New York, acquired from the above Feb. 4, 1902 on behalf of The Honorable Hugh J. Grant who then acquired the painting from the above on Apr. 28, 1902 Thence by descent in the family to the present owner C The Collection of Hugh J. Grant and Lucie Mackey Grant
Frame rubbing. Small hole at upper left, just to the right of the thatched roof. Dirty varnish. Three pinholes (upper left center and two in upper right center.) Canvas tearing along the top stretcher edge. Small hole at far upper left edge. Scattered areas of minor paint separation, mainly in the darker green and brown pigments at right. No apparent restoration. Small mark from tack at top center edge. 1 inch shaped tear in the roof of the cottage at the upper left.
