FRIEDRICH WILHELM I (1688-1740), King of Prussia . Letter signed ('Fr. Wilhelm') with autograph postscript signed ('F.W.') to his son, the future Frederick the Great, Potsdam, 11 March 1736, one page, 4to (minor soiling to margins).
An affectionate letter, with military news: Friedrich Wilhelm has received a letter from his son, from which he is happy to see that he is fulfilling the trust placed in him; in return he sends his affectionate wishes, 'and be assured by me that I shall maintain this sentiment to the grave': 'Ihr könnet darauß Meine zu Euch und Euer Bestes tragende treue Neigung erkennen, und von Mir versichert seyn daß Ich diese sentiments Biß ins grab Behalten werde'. The scrawled autograph postscript sends news of the appointments of Andreas Joachim von Kleist to the 'Finkische' infantry regiment, and of Georg Friedrich Heinrich von Borcke to two benefices in Pommerania and Magdeburg. Frederick the Great and his father had one of the most famously difficult father-son relationships in history: its low point had been in 1730-32 when, after an attempt to flee to the country, Frederick was forced to witness the execution of his closest friend, and was successively imprisoned and exiled.
