French School 18th Century Soldiers, Women and Children under a Tree 18th Century Soldiers, Women and Children under a Tree Oil on panel 13 3/8 x 17 1/8 inches (34 x 43.5 cm) Provenance: Private collection Spanierman Gallery, New York This scene of figures at rest and in conversation in a landscape is in the manner of the French painters Jean-Baptiste Joseph Pater (1695-1736) and Bonaventure de Bar (1700-29), both of whom were followers of Watteau. The subjects-from the turbaned man in a velvet robe, to the red-coated soldiers in three-corner hats, to the plainly dressed woman with a child strapped to her back in the foreground-result in an image of wide-ranging emotions and interactions. Many episodes are combined to create a vivid depiction of downtime in eighteenth-century France, probably in or near a military encampment. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC Collection of American Art
