When Napoleon returned from Elba to launch his final campaign, "The Hundred Days" of 1815, Ney promised the restored monarchy that he would not join him. However he remained loyal to Napoleon despite a promise to Louis XVIII, and personally led the doomed cavalry charge at Waterloo in June. He was arrested and tried by the Chamber of Peers (4-6 December) and, on 7 December, he was executed by firing squad in Paris near the Luxembourg Gardens. Ney's defence team had proposed to claim that Ney was no longer a French citizen and that the court could not try him.
