Beschreibung:

French Bronze Allegorical Group Titled La Defense Nationale After a model by Gustave Dore The patriotic soldier depicted holding a flag and sword, and a woman emblematic of Paris with a crown on her head. Height 39 1/4 inches. Perhaps best known as a book illustrator and painter, Gustave Dore was also a bronze sculptor. The present model is based on an original plaster model Dore submitted as his entry in a competition organized by the Prefecture de la Seine, in Paris in 1879, commemorating the defense of Paris during the Franco-Prussian war. Other well known artists who submitted entries in this competition included Auguste-Rodin-and Louis-Ernest Barrias who won the competition. This model is the larger of the two sizes in which it was cast. A smaller version is illustrated in Pierre Kjellberg's, Les Bronzes du XIXe siecle, Dictionnaire des sculpteurs, p. 289. A life size version of this model is in the collection of the Musee du Petit Palais, Paris. C
Appears to be in generally good condition, it appears there has been a restoration to the tip of the flag, some scratch marks and scuffing to the patina, including to the female figure's left side of face, her robe, and her neck, uniform dulling to the patina appropriate to age, signed in the front G. Dore, no apparent foundry mark, the lower part of base is gilt and gilding is worn
