FRANKLIN SEARCH EXPEDITION 1848-1849 Lieut. William Henry James BROWNE. Ten coloured views taken during the Arctic expedition of Her Majesty's Ships "Enterprise" and "Investigator," under the command of Captain Sir James C. Ross .. with a Summary of the various artic expeditions in search of Captain Sir John Franklin London: Ackermann & Co., 1850. 2° (36.9 x 27.6cm). Ten tinted lithographic views, on seven sheets, drawn on stone by Charles Haghe after Browne, printed by Day & Son, with touches of red added by hand to the first and fourth view. (Some light spotting to plates.) Original light blue cloth, blocked in gilt and blind, g.e. (some light soiling, spine chipped with some loss). Provenance : SIR ERNEST HENRY SHACKLETON (1874-1922, presentation inscription from Campbell Mackellar "Sir Ernest Shackleton from C.D.Mackellar. 1921"); by descent. A FINE SERIES OF VIEWS WITH A HIGHLY APPROPRIATE PROVENANCE. Sir John Franklin's final expedition was last seen in July 1845. By "1848 a strong expression of the necessity of ascertaining some intelligence of Sir John Franklin induced the Government to set on foot three... expeditions to proceed by various routes in search of the absent voyagers. The principal of these expeditions was that under Sir James Clark Ross, and was commissioned to follow as closely as possible the supposed track of Sir John Franklin It consisted of H.M.S. Enterprise ... and H.M.S. Investigator , commanded by Captain Bird,,, They sailed... on 12th May, 1848... They were off Uppernavik on the 13th July, and on 28th August off Cape Liverpool, at the entrance to Lancaster Sound, and nothing was heard of thier subsequent proceedings... until their unlooked for return off Scarborough, on 3rd November, 1849" (p.6 of Summary ). Browne served on board the Investigator , and in addition to producing the present views, lead one of the four search parties sent out by Ross during the short spring of 1849. Browne returned to the Arctic in May 1850 on the expedition led by Captain Austin The first indications of the fate of Franklin and his men were found by this expedition on August 23rd 1850.
