Franklin Dullin Briscoe American, 1844-1903 Cod Fishing Signed F. D. Briscoe (lr); inscribed indistinctly... American, 1844-1903 Cod Fishing Signed F. D. Briscoe (lr); inscribed indistinctly Cod... on the reverse Oil on canvas 24 x 42 1/2 inches Provenance: Private collection, MD A student of the noted marine artist Edward Moran Franklin Dullin Briscoe rendered portraits and history paintings, but was best known for his marines. A scene in the stormy sea tradition, Cod Fishing combines narrative and drama, leaving open the question as to whether the vessel in full sail will rescue its fishing partner. The safety of the shore, represented by an anchored vessel on smooth water at the horizon and land masses visible through the mist, has a dream like aspect in contrast with the desperation in the foreground. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
Glue relined. Frame rubbing. There is scattered inpaint throughout the sky and the water.
