A Treatise On the Lawfulness of Defensive War. In Two Parts.
Philadelphia: B. Franklin and D. Hall, 1748. Two parts in one, xviii, 36; 37-102 pp., 8vo (196 x 125 mm). Stitched self-wrappers, uncut. Housed in a cloth chemise and slipcase. Condition : minor browning, lower corner of title torn but without loss to text. a franklin imprint in remarkable as issued condition. Currie, the Rector of St. Davids Episcopal Church at Radnor, wrote this treatise in reply to the Quaker refusal to mount a defense against French and Spanish privateers who were threatening settlements in Delaware Bay during King George’s War. It was one of a series of pamphlets published by Franklin following his own Plain Truth, seeking to raise support for the formation of a volunteer militia.
