FRANK FRAZETTA Original art, Conan the Barbarian, 1966 Frank Frazetta's first illustration of Robert E. Howards' Conan The Barbarian. While receiving critical and commercial acclaim illustrating Ace Publications' Edgar Rice Burroughs paperbacks, Frazetta remained frustrated by the fact that his original art was not returned to him. He has often stated that this prevented him from producing his best effort. When Lancer Publications asked him to illustrate a series of Robert E. Howard's Conan paperbacks, they offered an increased rate and the return of his originals. This allowed Frazetta produce some of the finest work and, in readiness for his first cover he experimented with the look and feel of the character. The result was this watercolor depicting Conan in his mythical domain. Of historic interest is the rough drawing of Conan on the back of this piece which is the first concept drawing of Conan The Adventurer. Watercolor on paper-- 11 x 8½ inches.
